Hilton School District receives International Baccalaureate
Years Programme authorization
The Hilton Central School District
recently received authorization from the International
Baccalaureate (IB) to offer the IB Middle Years Programme
(MYP), which encompasses grades 5-10. The District currently
offers the Primary Years Programme (PYP) at Quest Elementary
School and the Diploma Programme (DP) at Hilton High School.
This new authorization makes Hilton School District the
first public school system in New York State to be
designated as an International Baccalaureate District.
Founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968,
the International Baccalaureate offers high quality programs
of international education to a worldwide community of
schools. The IB aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and
caring young people who help to create a better and more
peaceful world through intercultural understanding and
For the past three years, Hilton
schools have worked diligently to implement the IB-MYP. From
Oct. 27-29, IB representatives conducted a thorough review
of this implementation process by visiting four schools and
talking to Board members, teachers, administrators, students
and parents. The purpose of the visit was to assess whether
Hilton CSD had completed the requirements to be officially
authorized as an IB-MYP district.
Hilton CSD received a “Commendable”
rating in the authorization report from IB. Commendable
means that school practices are beyond the requirements for
authorization and will benefit the IB Programme as the
district moves forward toward full implementation.
“We are excited to continue our IB
journey and know that there is still a lot of work ahead of
us,” said Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Dr.
Barbara Surash. “We know that becoming an IB district would
not have happened if not for the hard work of so many
people—teachers, parents, students, administrators, Board of
Education members, staff, and of course our IB
The IB-MYP will be integrated into the
curriculum in grades 5-6 at Northwood and Village Elementary
Schools, grades 7-8 at Merton Williams Middle School, and
grades 9-10 at Hilton High School.
Parents and students
will be kept informed as the implementation process moves
forward. Look for more information in the next issue of the
Insight, mailed to home in late January.
