Northwood third graders give soldiers gifts from the heart

In keeping with the holiday spirit of giving, Lisa Davis’ third grade class at Northwood Elementary School learned about the importance of gifts from the heart. Students brainstormed a list of gifts they could give and that only through their actions could be received by others. The list included, but wasn’t limited to the following gifts: love, gratitude, caring, support, courage, leadership, respect, encouragement, empathy, patience, bravery, inspiration, devotion and loyalty. Students then used their writing skills to express their feelings in the form of a letter and made “little presents” to send to U.S. soldiers stationed far away from their loved ones.

Dear U.S. Soldier,

I am giving you this gift of gratitude. As an American citizen, I want to say thank you for keeping our country safe.  You have sacrificed your family, so that we can have freedom that others don’t have in their lives.  You continue to put your life on the line, to fight for peace, for those you have never met.  I want you to know that you are my hero, for all you do for us, even though you must miss your family tremendously.  I would like you to accept this gift of gratitude, so that this can always remind you of how important and special you are to me.
